In a must-win game five matchup against the Boston Celtics, Trae Young put on a show for the ages. With the Atlanta Hawks’ season on the line, the 22-year-old point guard hit a game-winning floater with just 0.9 seconds left on the clock, securing a 109-106 victory for the Hawks and sending them back to Atlanta for a pivotal game six.
For the Hawks, Young’s performance was nothing short of heroic. He finished the game with 39 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, shooting 10-of-23 from the field and an impressive 17-of-19 from the free-throw line. Young’s scoring outburst included a 17-point third quarter, where he repeatedly shredded the Celtics’ defense with his crafty dribbling and sharpshooting.
But Young’s clutch gene was on full display in the final moments of the game. With the Hawks trailing by one point and just over 20 seconds left on the clock, Young drew a foul on Celtics guard Marcus Smart and calmly sank two free throws to give Atlanta a one-point lead. On the ensuing possession, the Celtics had a chance to retake the lead, but a miscommunication between Smart and Evan Fournier led to a costly turnover, giving the Hawks the ball back with just seconds remaining.
That’s when Young went to work. Dribbling past Celtics center Tristan Thompson, Young launched a high-arcing floater over the outstretched arms of several Boston defenders. The shot hit nothing but net, sending the crowd at TD Garden into stunned silence and the Hawks into a frenzy of celebration.
For the Celtics, the loss was a gut-wrenching one. Despite getting solid performances from their stars, including 29 points and 12 rebounds from Jayson Tatum and 28 points from Kemba Walker, Boston simply couldn’t contain Young when it mattered most. The Celtics’ defense, which had been solid for most of the series, wilted under the pressure of Young’s scoring barrage.
Now, as the series shifts back to Atlanta, the Celtics find themselves in a precarious position. They’ll need to win game six on the road to force a game seven back in Boston, but doing so won’t be easy. The Hawks have all the momentum after Young’s heroics, and they’ll be playing in front of a raucous home crowd.
For the Celtics, the key will be finding a way to slow down Young. Easier said than done, of course, given his otherworldly talent and ability to score from virtually anywhere on the court. But Boston’s defenders will need to be more physical with Young, forcing him to give up the ball or take difficult shots.
If the Celtics can’t figure out a way to contain Young, their season will be over before they know it. And for a team that had high hopes coming into the playoffs, that would be a bitter pill to swallow.
But for the Hawks, the future is looking brighter by the minute. Young has emerged as a bona fide superstar, and with a supporting cast that includes the likes of John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic, the sky is the limit for this young and talented squad.
For now, all eyes will be on game six in Atlanta. Can the Hawks close out the series and advance to the second round? Or will the Celtics find a way to extend their season and force a game seven? One thing’s for sure: after Trae Young’s heroics in game five, anything is possible.
