South African authorities have announced the recapture of the notorious “Facebook Rapist,” who had escaped from prison with the help of corrupt guards. The rapist, whose real name is Thabo Bester, had been sentenced to 50 years in prison in 2016 for a series of rapes and assaults that he had committed after luring his victims through Facebook.
According to reports, Bester and two other inmates managed to escape from the Johannesburg Correctional Centre on April 9th by disguising themselves as prison officials. They were able to convince the guards to let them out of the facility, and then fled in a getaway car that was waiting outside. The escape prompted a nationwide manhunt, with the authorities offering a reward for information leading to the recapture of the escapees.
After four days on the run, Bester was caught on April 13th in a suburb of Johannesburg, thanks to a tip from a member of the public. He was found hiding in a house, where he had been receiving assistance from friends and family members. He was taken back into custody without incident and is now facing additional charges of escaping from prison and corruption.
The escape has raised serious questions about the security of South Africa’s prisons and the extent of corruption within the country’s correctional system. The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and promised to take strict action against any guards found to be involved in the escape. They have also vowed to step up security measures to prevent future prison breaks.
