Former Philadelphia Proud Boys chapter president Zachary Rehl took the stand in his own defense on Monday, April 12th, 2023. Rehl is one of several Proud Boys members who have been charged in connection with the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot.
During his testimony, Rehl claimed that he did not participate in the violence that occurred at the Capitol that day. He stated that he arrived in Washington, D.C. with other members of the Proud Boys to show support for then-President Donald Trump, but did not engage in any illegal activity.
Rehl’s defense team also argued that the government’s case against him was politically motivated and that he was being unfairly targeted because of his association with the Proud Boys. They argued that Rehl’s involvement with the group was solely about protecting free speech and promoting conservative values.
The prosecution, on the other hand, presented evidence that they say proves Rehl’s involvement in the Capitol riot. They showed photos and videos of Rehl at the scene, wearing clothing that identified him as a Proud Boys member and communicating with other members of the group through a walkie-talkie.
